Saison après saison, le Théâtre du Châtelet déroule le fil de sa programmation avec une constance radieuse. Après avoir accueilli la mythique production originale de West Side Story de Bernstein, puis deux de ses autres œuvres pour Broadway (Candide et On the Town), le théâtre accueille la création parisienne d’une autre page célèbre de l’histoire du musical new-yorkais, The Sound of Music de Richard Rogers et Oscar Hammerstein. Dernière collaboration du duo Rogers et Hammerstein, respectivement compositeur et parolier, l’œuvre, traduite en français sous le titre La Mélodie du bonheur, fut dès sa création en 1959 l’un de leur plus grands succès. Comme le souligne Jean-Luc Choplin, le directeur du Théâtre du Châtelet, « The Sound of Music fait partie des ouvrages mythiques dont tout le monde ou presque peut fredonner un air ». Cela tient évidemment à l’adaptation cinématographique qu’en fit, dès 1965, Robert Wise, celui-là même qui quelque quatre ans auparavant avait porté à l’écran West Side Story. Pour donner vie sur scène à l’histoire de la famille Von Trapp, Jean-Luc Choplin a décidé de faire une nouvelle fois appel à Emilio Sagi, qui a sa part dans la nouvelle orientation esthétique du Théâtre du Châtelet – avec Le Chanteur de Mexico, La Generala ou encore Les Fées. Le metteur en scène espagnol insiste sur l’omniprésence de la nature dans l’œuvre : « Je veux mettre au premier plan l’idée de paysage, dit-il. J’essaie de parvenir à l’essence des sentiments pour voir ressortir le rôle fondamental de la Nature ».
