1966 : The Sound of Silence, deuxième album de Simon et Garfunkel, emporte les cœurs sixties dans les vents électriques de ses mélodies fugitives. Souvenirs briqués à l’or fin de la nostalgie… dont Alvis Hermanis écaille aujourd’hui le vernis jauni vintage, pour scruter la jeunesse effervescente de nos parents. « La scène est l’espace de l’éphémère. C’est pourquoi c’est un art si mélancolique, il est définitivement ancré dans l’Europe d’autrefois même s’il peut raconter des histoires d’aujourd’hui » dit le metteur en scène letton, qui sans cesse s’évade des ornières de la forme en empruntant diverses voies esthétiques. Quitte à dérouter. Faisant écho à Long life, qui observait le quotidien de retraités parqués dans un appartement communautaire à Riga, The Sound of Silence remonte le temps et montre les mêmes protagonistes 40 ans plus tôt. Sans tabou ni naphtaline, cette pièce sans parole met en scène et en musique ce petit zoo domestique, secoué par les derniers soubresauts de l’utopie du bonheur collectif. Drolatique… cruellement.
