C’est la seconde fois que vous mettez en scène une pièce de l’auteur australien Timothy Daly (la première était Le Bal de Kafka). Comment caractérisez-vous cet auteur ? Qu’appréciez-vous particulièrement chez lui ?
Isabelle Starkier : Pour moi, un grand auteur sait manipuler la fable et la farce, l’humour tragique, l’onirisme qui hésite entre cauchemar et poésie, le grotesque de situations – comme on parlerait de comique de situation mais avec des retournements grinçants, des virées au noir et à l’absurde – , les personnages qui retournent leur bouffon ou leur clown en une sensibilité à vif à coups d’ émotions impudiques et de larmes retenues… C’est ce que font Shakespeare, Molière, Brecht, Pirandello, Feydeau… et c’est bien ce que fait à son tour Timothy Daly.
De quelle façon Timothy Daly s’empare-t-il de la pièce de Shakespeare ?
I. S. : Timothy se livre à une variation (ô combien) théâtrale autour de Richard III. Il tourne autour, détourne, tord, détord et dévoile ses innombrables ressorts : la manipulation de l’Autre, la différence, l'(auto)dérision, le pouvoir, la mise en jeu, la prise de conscience, la responsabilité de celui qui fait et de celui qui laisse faire… Il donne à entendre des pans entiers du texte de Shakespeare tout en s’en jouant, en le re-jouant et en le déjouant. C’est à la fois une nouvelle interprétation de Richard III et une réflexion très moderne sur la théâtralité du pouvoir – qui éclaire autrement notre société du "Super-Show".
La pièce compte deux comédiens. Qui interprètent-ils ?
I. S. : Deux comédiens jouent deux comédiens… qui jouent Richard III à l’infini, dans un lieu clos qui pourrait être une prison ou un théâtre. Dans ce thriller théâtral et autour de cette répétition inlassable de Shakespeare, on apprend peu à peu que ces deux êtres opposés et complémentaires (un avocat et un tueur) sont liés par un même crime qui les contraint à rejouer, à travers Richard III, leur crime, leur trahison, leur complicité pour finir par jouer enfin… leur propre histoire.
En quoi la pièce se définit-elle comme une mise en abyme de la représentation ? Qu’apporte cette mise en abyme à la dramaturgie ?
I.S. : Le va-et-vient entre le texte de Shakespeare et le texte de Timothy Daly contraint les deux acteurs qui s’affrontent sur ce ring théâtral à deux types de jeu et à une réflexion sur l’interprétation – comme dans Le bal de Kafka. Où commence et où s’arrête le jeu? Quelle différence entre la scène et la "vraie vie" ? Cette réflexion "pratique" sous-tend l’histoire qui conduit ces deux acteurs à réinterpréter Richard III. Une histoire qui tient du rallye et du chemin de croix, où chaque grande étape est rythmée par une scène de Richard III, qui nous tient en suspens et distille peu à peu les ingrédients d’une fable policière où les retournements se succèdent et où le manipulateur n’est pas forcément celui que l’on croit…
