Réminiscence enfantine, magie lumineuse et art millénaire, le théâtre d’ombres puise ses sources en Asie où il reste un art coutumier. Wayang Kulit est un spectacle à deux dimensions, silhouettes de marionnettes en cuir projetées par le faisceau d’une lampe centrale, spécificité du style javanais. Thèmes classiques de ce genre théâtral, les épopées hindouistes sont mises en scène par le dalang, véritable maître de cérémonie qui organise, manipule, prête sa voix à tous les personnages. Sri Joko Rahardjo a choisi d’animer un épisode romanesque du Ramayana, où Rama, aidé d’Hanuman et son armée de singes, part en quête de sa fiancée Sinta, enlevée par un roi malfaisant. Dix-neuf musiciens indonésiens et français l’accompagnent, jouant sur un gamelan, immense ensemble d’instruments percussifs rivalisant de beauté sonore et esthétique. Une parenthèse enchantée, alchimie entre tradition, jeux d’ombres, musique et poésie.
