Comment s’est passée la rencontre avec Dirk Roofthooft et Brodsky ?
Kris Defoort : Depuis longtemps, j’ai une passion pour un long poème de Brodsky intitulé Elégie pour John Donne. Je voulais absolument faire quelque chose avec ce poème. En travaillant sur mon deuxième opéra avec Guy Cassiers, j’ai rencontré Dirk Roofthooft, et j’ai découvert que c’était un très grand fan de Joseph Brodsky. Il l’a découvert à la télévision, lisant ses poèmes, ce qu’il faisait de manière très engagée, quasi obsessionnelle. A partir de là, nous avons décidé de faire quelque chose à partir de cette Elégie pour John Donne, qui en fin de compte ne figurera pas dans le spectacle.
Joseph Brodsky n’est pas très connu ici, comment caractériseriez-vous son œuvre ?
K.D : C’est un auteur russe qui s’est exilé aux Etats-Unis pendant l’ère soviétique. Son exil l’a sans doute beaucoup marqué. Il dit de ses parents : « ils ne m’ont même pas appris comment mourir car je n’étais pas là quand ils sont morts ». Sa poésie traite donc des grands thèmes : la vie, la mort, la perte. Ce sont des écrits assez mélancoliques qui combinent les éléments spirituels avec le terre-à-terre. Souvent, Brodsky part d’un détail qu’il grossit à l’envi, d’un objet concret qu’il va rapprocher d’un sentiment métaphysique. C’est le cas par exemple dans L’Epervier, dans Papillon, ou dans Nature morte. C’est un alchimiste, qui, à partir de choses banales, déploie des états d’âme.
Et cette poésie se prête-t-elle bien à la création musicale ?
K.D : Pour moi, c’est plein de couleurs. La poésie de Brodsky reste très mystérieuse et joue beaucoup sur l’imagination. Les sons sont parfois plus importants que les mots. Bien que je ne comprenne pas la langue, j’adore par exemple l’écouter lire ses poèmes en russe. En France, on joue ses poèmes en français, en Angleterre, en anglais, en Flandres, en flamand. Et ces changements se reflètent aussi dans ma façon de jouer. Comme les phrases sont construites différemment, les silences sont différents, je dois faire de la composition instantanée.
Comment s’est opéré le choix des œuvres ? Quelle forme prend le spectacle ?
K.D : Dirk m’a proposé quarante poèmes et on en a gardé une quinzaine. On essayait et on gardait ce qui marchait. C’était très organique et intuitif à la fois. Le spectacle parcourt une variété de tons sur un fil conducteur qui est celui de la mélancolie et à la fin, celle-ci explose en rage. Mais le spectacle n’est pas le même d’une fois sur l’autre. J’improvise beaucoup. Il y a des plages musicales, d’autres ou Dirk parle seul. Globalement, Dirk incarne l’écrivain, et chaque soir, j’essaye à la fois de me mettre au service des mots de Brodsky et de suivre les variations de l’acteur.
