Le père soigne son cancer à l’hôpital en ignorant la gravité de son état. Ses enfants, qui ont tous raté leur vie et oscillent entre renoncement, boulimie et compromission, l’entourent. Le père avoue ses faiblesses et ses égarements. La nouvelle de l’existence de sa jeune maîtresse kosovare et enceinte finit de bouleverser les rapports familiaux. Pendant ce temps, en décalage et en contrepoint, une femme africaine se tourmente pour son fils. « En alternant un style réaliste et des instants d’humour surréel, dans une langue mimétique du quotidien précise et rigoureuse », le texte mêle « problématique sociale et problématique existentielle » et éclaire « quelques zones d’ombre de ce que nous sommes », comme le remarque la traductrice Carlotta Clerici. Yvan Garouel s’empare de cette pièce (« que je tiens pour un chef-d’œuvre », dit-il) afin d’atteindre avec elle un de « ces moments de vérité, ces moments de grâce, qui sont de l’ordre du possible au théâtre vivant ».
