Robespierre contribua héroïquement au renversement de la monarchie et à l’établissement d’un gouvernement populaire. Mais, à partir de 93, et jusqu’à la loi de Prairial dite de la Grande Terreur, il participa à la multiplication des exécutions. Que conserver de Robespierre ? L’arbre de la liberté ou la guillotine ? « Il a succombé sous les coups des fripons. La légende, astucieusement forgée par ses ennemis qui sont ceux du progrès social, a égaré jusqu’à des républicains », écrivait l’historien Albert Mathiez dans ses Etudes sur Robespierre. André Benedetto résiste aux fripons dans cette pièce, qui met en scène le dialogue en prison de Philippe Buonarroti, futur membre de la conspiration communiste des égaux, et soutien actif de la sédition babouviste, et de Maurice Duplay qui logeait Robespierre. Les deux amis évoquent l’Incorruptible, ses luttes, ses amours, sa fiancée et sa fin sur l’échafaud. Le souffle et la fièvre de Benedetto viennent servir la mémoire du grand homme.
