Pourquoi avoir choisi d’improviser plutôt que de composer un accompagnement musical pour le film de Murnau ?
Thierry Escaich : Il y a quelques années, j’ai composé sur L’Heure suprême de Frank Borzage, qui m’a ouvert des voies de recherches que j’ai souhaité poursuivre par l’improvisation. Le cinéma est une source de renouvellement inépuisable, qui me permet d’envisager des choses que je n’aurais jamais imaginé écrire sans les propositions d’un cinéaste. Composer – ou improviser – d’après un film revient à s’accaparer cette part de propositions.
Quel est le travail en amont de l’improvisation ?
T. E. : Certains improvisateurs ne regardent pas le film et préfèrent se laisser surprendre. Au contraire, j’ai besoin d’être sûr de ce qu’a voulu faire l’auteur. Je le regarde trois ou quatre fois, afin de connaître le découpage, savoir quand une scène ne doit pas être traitée au premier degré. Je dois pouvoir anticiper psychologiquement le déroulement du film, pour le suggérer au spectateur. En revanche, j’essaie de ne pas prévoir à l’avance ce qui est proprement musical : je construis la musique pendant le déroulement du film.
La spontanéité demeure-t-elle après plusieurs interprétations ?
T. E. : Évidemment, je ne vais pas adopter une vision très différente d’une soirée à l’autre. Je sais par exemple que telle scène sera traitée comme une valse folle, car c’est ainsi que je l’entends. Le fait de me poser des questions sur un film finit par m’en donner une vision assez profonde, à tel point que je pourrais le mettre en partition. Les diverses couches de musique progressivement dessinent une trame.
Ce travail pourrait-il être une étape vers une œuvre scénique ?
T. E. : Avec L’Heure suprême, j’ai eu l’impression de composer un petit opéra dans une veine psychologique, à la Britten. Avoir travaillé sur le cinéma muet expressionniste a changé mon regard sur les livrets d’opéra, et j’envisagerais davantage aujourd’hui composer un opéra sur un texte de Gogol par exemple.
