Flûtiste de haut niveau, Thierry Fischer occupa le poste de premier flûtiste solo à l’Orchestre philharmonique de Hambourg puis à l’Orchestre de l’Opéra de Zurich et au sein du Chamber Orchestra of Europe (sous la direction d’Abbado). C’est aussi à la tête de cette formation qu’il a fait ses grands débuts internationaux de chef d’orchestre. Thierry Fischer rassemble dans ce programme des œuvres de Haydn (des extraits de La Création ; la Symphonie n°22 en mi bémol majeur), Schubert (Chant des Esprits au-dessus des eaux, partition conçue pour chœur d’hommes et cordes, sur le poème de Goethe) et enfin de ses deux compatriotes Heinz Holliger (né en 1939), qui compose en 2003 Six Lieder inspirés par des poèmes de Christian Morgenstern (1871-1914), et Frank Martin (1890-1974), qui signe en 1944 la cantate In terra pax, message d’espoir sur des textes bibliques en écho aux derniers mois de la Deuxième Guerre mondiale. Avec Hendrickje Van Kerckhove (soprano), Jane Irwin (alto), Christopher Maltman (baryton), Vuyani Mlinde (basse), Barry Banks (ténor) et le BBC National Chorus of Wales.
