En plein centenaire des Ballets Russes, on ne pouvait faire fi du travail de Thierry Malandain, tant sa démarche se revendique d’une filiation avec les maîtres du passé : même envie de pousser le vocabulaire classique au service de la modernité d’une expression, de réunir autour de sa danse la musique et la scénographie, et le désir toujours présent de revisiter ce qui constitue les grandes œuvres de la danse. C’est le cas avec L’Après-midi d’un Faune, La Mort du cygne ou le Portrait de l’Infante qu’il réinterroge dans une conférence dansée au CND. Son sens de la relecture s’exprime aussi avec sa Carmen : il reprend le livret de Mérimée, mais s’encanaille avec la musique de Schubert, La Jeune fille et la Mort. L’Amour Sorcier, popularisé au milieu des années 20 par La Argentina, devient chez Malandain une ode à l’amour et à la mort, symbolisée par ces roses noires qui finissent par recouvrir la scène.
