OPÉRA BASTILLE / OPÉRA EN CRÉATION FRANÇAISE
Thomas Adès est un génie de l’orchestration, ce qui ne va pas, parfois, sans quelques facilités. Mais dans une œuvre comme The Exterminating Angel, ce sont toutes les forces de l’orchestre – et même au-delà avec les ondes Martenot et une profusion de percussions – qui se mettent au service d’une extraordinaire force dramatique. À force de rythmes désarticulés, de surimpressions de lignes harmoniques et de réminiscences lyriques tronquées qui remuent souterrainement une vocalité débridée, le compositeur revisite, d’une façon toute personnelle, l’atmosphère de dîner surréaliste du film de Buñuel dont il s’inspire. On peut faire confiance au metteur en scène Calixto Bieito pour communiquer à toute la scène et à une distribution familière de l’opéra contemporain la folie du livret et de la musique.
