Réputé pour son génie pianistique, Liszt reste peu connu en tant que compositeur de Lied. Or, celui-ci a tout au long de sa vie composé des mélodies – en français, en italien, en russe, mais surtout en allemand. Thomas Hampson a d’ailleurs opté pour l’œuvre germanique, en sélectionnant des Lieder écrits sur des vers de Rellstab, de Lenau et de Heine. Ce dernier a également inspiré Schumann, qui a, lui aussi, mis en musique Im Rhein ou Anfangs wollt’ich fast verzagen. Mais surtout, il sera intéressant de rapprocher les Lieder de Liszt de ceux de Mahler choisis par le baryton américain. Composés après une aventure amoureuse, les Lieders eines fahrenden Gesellen développent une tonalité douloureuse, entre crainte et espoir. Quant aux Knaben Wunderhorn, ils mêlent avec génie mélodies populaires et envolées lyriques.
