C’est un choix étonnant que de monter du Guitry pour un metteur en scène de 25 ans…
Thomas Jolly : Guitry disait qu’on se construit contre ou tout contre. C’était avant tout un acteur qui écrivait, et, moi, je mets en scène parce que je viens du plateau. Je l’ai découvert tardivement et j’ai été immédiatement frappé par l’organicité de sa langue. J’ai donc voulu mettre à jour les rouages de son écriture, tenter de me constituer une oreille absolue me permettant de cerner d’où vient la pièce et de reconstituer le geste de son écriture. Ce nettoyage m’a permis de découvrir une écriture faite pour le plateau, pensée et exécutée à toute vitesse.
Cette vitesse est-elle un effet de mise en scène contemporaine ou une propriété intrinsèque de son œuvre ?
T. J. : Elle est intrinsèque. Guitry est un auteur extrêmement prolifique, il écrivait beaucoup et très rapidement. Dans l’ensemble, je n’ai pas voulu délocaliser la pièce dans un monde moderne, ni développer une forme naturaliste dans laquelle son œuvre a été trop souvent représentée. J’ai simplement voulu opérer ce nettoyage de la langue, tenter d’entendre cette langue du point de vue d’un acteur d’aujourd’hui.

Pourquoi le choix de Toâ en particulier ?
T. J. : Toâ est une pièce bilan pour Guitry. En 1939, il écrit Florence, sa première version. Puis, en 49, il écrit Toâ. Le titre vient de ce qu’on appelait Guitry « Monsieur Moâ », en raison de son égocentrisme. Entre Florence et Toâ, il y a la guerre, les soupçons de collaboration, la prison, mais aussi l’émergence du cinéma et d’un théâtre qui ne peut plus avoir les mêmes rapports avec le monde. Dans Toâ, Guitry prend donc du recul sur lui-même à travers ce personnage de Michel Desnoyers, un dramaturge que sa femme quitte alors qu’on lui passe commande d’une pièce. Il effectue donc une mise en abyme de sa personne et son Moi devient la véritable matière du plateau. En cela, il était très en avance, car cette thématique de l’intime constitue, il me semble, une tendance de fond du théâtre actuel.
Est-ce une pièce que vous avez décidé de monter pour faire mieux connaître l’auteur ?
T. J. : Pas vraiment. J’ai pourtant été frappé par les réactions de directeurs de lieux quand je leur disais vouloir monter du Guitry. Le contentieux lié à l’attitude de Guitry pendant la guerre n’a pas encore disparu. Mais si notre pièce est respectueuse du texte et de l’auteur – on intercale même quelques extraits audio et de films de Guitry – il s’y esquisse surtout la touche identitaire d’un groupe qui s’est constitué autour de ce projet.
Et cette identité, comment voulez-vous la construire ?
T. J : De manière évidente, j’ai été imprégné de l’enseignement de Stanislas Nordey et sa mise en scène de La puce à l’oreille de Feydeau a par exemple été pour moi un moment fondateur. Maintenant, je ne suis pas de cette génération de metteurs en scène tout puissants. J’aspire à revenir à des fonctionnements plus communautaires, où le metteur en scène n’est pas premier dans le maillage d’une création mais le simple garant de sa cohérence. C’est ce que nous tentons de faire dans chaque création avec la compagnie Piccola Familia.
