Thomas Quasthoff est assurément l’un des meilleurs interprètes du lied romantique depuis Dieter Fischer-Dieskau, auquel on le compare souvent, au-delà de la clarté du timbre, pour une pareille intelligence des œuvres – musique et mots – qu’il interprète. Avec Schubert et Brahms, Mahler est son compositeur de prédilection. Pour ce récital, il a choisi de mettre en regard le compositeur des Rückert Lieder (une œuvre dont il a gravé avec Pierre Boulez une interprétation idéale de la version orchestrale pour Deutsche Grammophon) avec les pages bien moins connues de Carl Loewe (1796-1869) qui, comme Schubert, s’abreuvait de poésie romantique – et comme Mahler, de poésie populaire. Un riche choix de lieder de Richard Strauss complète ce programme propre à illustrer les extraordinaires qualités expressives de Thomas Quasthoff. Enfin, pédagogue enthousiaste, il transmet son talent les 15, 16 et 17 février à l’occasion d’une master class ouverte au public.
