Théâtre Nanterre-Amandiers / d’après Sénèque / mes Simon Stone
Le mythe de Thyeste nous est notamment parvenu grâce à la pièce écrite par Sénèque, au 1er siècle de notre ère. Mêlant infanticide et cannibalisme, le destin de ce roi de Mycènes – qui mange, à son insu, les enfants qu’il a eus avec l’épouse de son frère jumeau, Atrée – confine à l’horreur. Originaire d’Australie, le jeune metteur en scène Simon Stone projette cette pièce dans notre époque. « Si la tragédie de Sénèque donne à voir ce qui excède l’imagination, explique le dossier de présentation des Amandiers, [cette] proposition s’empare des tabous [qu’elle explore] et les insère dans des situations quotidiennes contemporaines, brutalement familières, excessives jusqu’à devenir monstrueuses. » Ainsi, dans cette version de Thyeste, « on bavarde, on boit, on s’ennuie, on joue au pingpong, (…) on s’insulte, on se rappelle des souvenirs d’enfance, (…) on trompe, viole et assassine ». Tout cela au sein d’un théâtre avant tout pensé comme un divertissement. D’un théâtre qui travaille à conjuguer « aspects populaires » et « recherche avant-gardiste ».
