L’Olympia / nouvel album
Il y a encore peu, il twittait son enthousiasme pour le dernier album du groupe de métal Meshuggah, ses métriques complexes et ses sonorités saturées. Consacré aux standards, son dernier album accueille Mark Turner, Joshua Redman et Ambrose Akinmusire en invités de choix et s’ouvre symboliquement par une relecture d’un thème d’Elmo Hope, pianiste be-bop maudit, en mode power trio. Le précédent, « The Call Within », témoignait de l’intérêt indéfectible du pianiste pour les histoires et légendes arméniennes, chrétiennes et préchrétiennes, et les folklores millénaires de sa patrie d’origine. Tigran Hamasyan s’est forgé un style — et un nom — à partir de ces éléments et de quelques autres, consolidé par sa passion pour Bud Powell et par son association avec certains cadors du jazz le plus incisif, comme Ari Hoenig, Nate Wood et Ben Wendel, qui vantent sa force de calcul métrique et le lyrisme de son inspiration. À la tête d’un trio qui fait vibrer la scène rien qu’à l’énoncé de ses membres, Matt Brewer à la contrebasse et Justin Brown à la batterie, il présente « StandArt » à l’Olympia. Soit l’art et la manière de relire quelques classiques du jazz au XXIe siècle.
