Pour un compositeur autant marqué par le sens de l’Histoire que Luigi Nono (1924-1990), la question de la mémoire, à l’intérieur même d’une œuvre musicale, est primordiale. Canti di vita e d’amore (1962) témoigne de l’engagement du compositeur, qui refuse de rester aveugle face à l’horreur du monde à l’ère nucléaire. Dans …sofferte onde serene… (1976), le piano joue avec son double : sur la bande magnétique qui l’accompagne se font entendre les sons enregistrés par Maurizio Pollini et retravaillés en studio par le compositeur. Chaque nouvelle interprétation se souvient ou s’écarte de ce geste initial : la présence immédiate du pianiste et la diffusion sonore en direct ravivent l’empreinte à jamais conservée. En contrepoint, deux suites tirées d’opéras proposent une narration sans voix : Pelléas et Mélisande de Debussy dans un arrangement d’Erich Leinsdorf, et une suite d’épisodes que Gérard Pesson a tirés de sa Pastorale d’après Honoré d’Urfé.
