Nanterre / musique contemporaine
Ce sont deux visages de la musique états-unienne. Nés à New York, Elliott Carter (1908-2012) et Steve Reich (né en 1936) illustrent les chemins qu’a pu prendre la musique savante au xxe siècle, vers une écriture complexe, proche des avant-gardes européennes, ou vers une expression plus immédiate, via un certain minimalisme. Le programme conçu par Laurent Cuniot dépasse ce supposé antagonisme, en insistant sur la dimension rythmique, le contrepoint qui ennoblit la mélodie. Les voies sont différentes : écriture ciselée et « mélodies de timbres » portent les poèmes d’Elizabeth Bishop (chantés ici par Élise Chauvin) dans A Mirror on which to dwell de Carter quand, chez Steve Reich, le soliste répond à ses propres doubles enregistrés (Cello Counterpoint) ou que sons de la ville et écriture instrumentale se contrecollent (City Life). Les deux partagent au fond l’art d’un entre-tissage juste et signifiant des différentes voix.
