Dernier des quatorze opéras que Haendel a écrits pour la Royal Academy of Music, Tolomeo a été créé en 1728 au King’s Theater de Londres, avec un des plus prestigieux plateaux du moment. Sur un livret de Haym, avec lequel le compositeur avait déjà collaboré pour, entre autres, Giulio Cesare, l’ouvrage affirme le cocktail gagnant d’intrigues amoureuses et politiques de la scène lyrique italophile de l’époque, propice à l’exposition de la virtuosité et de la musicalité des plus grands solistes. Sous la direction du chef et claveciniste Francesco Corti, les pupitres de l’ensemble Il Pomo d’Oro feront revivre les saveurs d’un opus encore méconnu, redécouvert en Allemagne au milieu du XXe siècle. La partition sera défendue par un cast de valeurs montantes, tels Giuseppina Bridelli ou Paul-Antoine Bénos-Djian, et emmenée par Jakub Orlinski, l’un des contre-ténors les plus en vue du moment, qui reprendra le flambeau de l’illustre castrat Senesino, créateur du rôle-titre.
