Le mois d’octobre va passer très vite en si bonne compagnie du côté du Duc des Lombards : le magistral trompettiste Tom Harrell donne d’emblée le ton (les 9 et 10/10) avec la musique de son dernier album « Infinity » paru chez HighNote en mars 2019, reposant sur la grâce de sa sonorité et son sens inné de la mélodie, entouré de ses fidèles complices Danny Grissett (piano), Ugonna Okegwo (contrebasse) et Johnathan Blake (batterie). Tom Harrell est de 40 ans l’aîné de l’autre étoile américaine de l’instrument qui prendra sa suite sur la scène du Duc : Theo Croker. Le jeune homme au look aiguisé célèbre dans son récent « Star People Nation » chez Okeh/Sony un art du jazz sachant regarder vers le passé (il n’a pas oublié qu’il était le petit-fils du trompettiste Doc Cheatham), tout en assumant un son résolument urbain nourri de hip-hop et de R’n’B. Avec Mike King au piano, Eric Wheeler à la contrebasse et Shekwoaga Ode à la batterie (les 16 et 17). Autre bonheur : c’est le grand pianiste Harold Mabern qui conclura en trio ce mois décidément très américain (du 24 au 26). Cette figure du Be Bop aujourd’hui âgée de 83 ans a joué avec Wes Montgomery, Sarah Vaughan, Miles Davis, Lee Morgan, Sonny Rollins…
