« J’ai longtemps pensé dans mon enfance que Tombouctou n’existait pas, et l’expression « aller à Tombouctou » revêtait pour moi, sans doute comme pour chacun, l’idée de partir dans un endroit inconnu… » À ce fantasme géographique où s’accumule tout un imaginaire de voyages, Emmanuelle Vo-Dinh ajoute la sensation de « déjà-vu », cette fenêtre ouverte vers un inconscient qui rêve de réminiscence. La pièce, créée à l’été 2015 au Festival d’Avignon, noue fil à fil ces deux thèmes, tout en laissant aux sept interprètes le soin de déclencher des bribes de phrases chorégraphiques tout autant que des phonèmes sibyllins, grâce à l’utilisation d’un jeu de cartes inventé par le musicien-producteur Brian Eno et le peintre Peter Schmidt, contenant des consignes à exécuter. Du coup, la chorégraphie se fabrique sous les yeux du spectateur, imaginant chaque soir de nouveaux rites collectifs et de nouvelles compositions dansées.
