On le sait, c’est grâce à son futur mari André Schwartz-Bart, auteur du Deniers des Justes (prix Goncourt 1959), que Simone se mettra à écrire. Une œuvre faite de coups d’éclat, comme son deuxième roman Pluie et vent sur Télumé Miracle, auréolé de succès et souvent considéré comme l’un des chefs-d’œuvre de la littérature caribéenne, et de silence tant elle et son mari ont pu être critiqués pour leurs prises de position contre l’esclavage. Ton beau capitaine, paru en 1987, brise une période de retrait. Cette pièce en un acte raconte l’histoire de Wilnor, un homme qui travaille à 7000 km de chez lui et correspond avec sa femme, restée au pays, par le bais de cassettes audio. L’exil, l’isolement, le manque, la quête identitaire sont au cœur de ce monologue à deux voix. Maud Galet Lalande met en scène ce texte « qui restitue à la condition d’exilé, vécue de l’intérieur, une dimension universelle » et convie lumière, son et mapping vidéo pour « donner vie à l’absente sur scène tel un hologramme ».
