En évoquant sur des textes tirés de l’Évangile les derniers moments de la vie du Christ, de sa condamnation à son agonie sur la croix, la Passion selon saint Matthieu laisse libre cours à l’hallucinante imagination et puissance créatrice de Bach. La portée de ce prodigieux chef-d’oeuvre dépasse donc, comme rarement, la dimension religieuse de l’ouvrage. Le miracle de la création de la Passion selon Saint Matthieu à Leipzig en 1729, où l’œuvre a surgi dans son temps comme un oratorio d’une puissance sonore, esthétique et expressive foudroyante, semble devoir se reproduire à chaque nouvelle écoute. Surtout si ses interprètes sont aussi remarquables et adéquates que ceux appelés pour cette soirée à Pleyel, où le tonique Ton Koopman, qui a enregistré une exemplaire intégrale des cantates de Bach, sera à la tête de son Amsterdam Baroque Orchestra et d’une distribution vocale de haut vol où culmine Tilman Lichdi, salué comme l’un des meilleurs Évangélistes actuels.
