Vous êtes l’un des fondateurs de Teatri Uniti. Quel a été le point de départ de ce collectif artistique ?
Toni Servillo : Teatri Uniti est né, en 1987, de la fusion de trois compagnies napolitaines : Falso Movimento, Teatro dei Mutamenti et Teatro Studio di Caserta. Mario Martone, Antonio Neiwiller et moi-même avons décidé de mettre nos énergies en commun pour fonder un laboratoire artistique permanent capable d’élargir nos horizons de travail en créant des conditions de rencontres avec d’autres artistes : des comédiens et des metteurs en scène, bien sûr, mais aussi des musiciens, des cinéastes… Cette union, devenue au fil des ans un point de repère pour les jeunes générations, a favorisé la naissance d’un théâtre et d’un cinéma indépendants en Italie.
Vous mettez aujourd’hui en scène la Trilogie de la villégiature en collaboration avec le Piccolo Teatro. Quelle est l’idée de cette rencontre entre Teatri Uniti et cette grande institution ?
T. S. : Voilà maintenant plusieurs années que le Piccolo Teatro accueille mes spectacles, ce qui m’a permis d’établir une relation de fidélité avec le public milanais. Lorsque les dirigeants du Piccolo ont appris que j’avais pour projet de mettre en scène la Trilogie de la Villégiature, un texte emblématique de leur répertoire, ils ont pensé qu’il s’agissait d’une belle opportunité de coproduction. D’autant que nos identités respectives, bien qu’issues de deux traditions théâtrales différentes, se fondent sur une même philosophie du théâtre.

Quelle est cette philosophie ?
T. S. : C’est l’idée d’un théâtre offert en partage au public. Un théâtre sans pesanteur intellectuelle, sans arrogance stylistique avec, au centre de la représentation, un très grand travail d’acteurs. Un théâtre qui part à l’assaut des textes du répertoire en ayant toujours comme ambition de rendre la tradition vivante. Même si je ne me considère pas comme un disciple de Giorgio Strehler, j’ai appris de cet immense metteur en scène que le théâtre doit avant tout être une fête : une fête des sens et de l’esprit, une fête qui procure autant de plaisir à un intellectuel qu’à n’importe quel autre spectateur.
En 1979, la mise en scène de Giorgio Strehler donnait une vision très tchekhovienne de la Trilogie de la villégiature. En est-il de même de votre spectacle ?
T. S. : Non. Ma vision de la Trilogie de la villégiature, pièce dans laquelle Goldoni dépeint les aventures d’une petite bourgeoisie se ruinant pour imiter le mode de vie de l’aristocratie, est plus purement goldonienne. Ainsi, contrairement à Giorgio Strehler, je ne pense pas que le personnage de Giacinta soit la victime d’une société en mutation. Pour moi, en refusant de sortir de la logique de leur caste bourgeoise, en se rangeant du côté du conformisme plutôt que de la liberté, les protagonistes de Goldoni s’affirment comme les principaux responsables de leur destin.
