C’est avec la compagnie Grenade, constituée de jeunes danseurs issus de l’aventure Grenade à Marseille, que Josette Baiz a voulu essayer son style original et volontairement touche-à-tout aux rythmes de la comédie musicale. Pourtant, il ne s’agit pas d’une re-création ou d’une adaptation du chef-d’œuvre de Bernstein et Robbins. L’histoire est là, à travers les nombreuses oppositions et contradictions qui sont le fil rouge de la pièce, à travers les mouvements d’ensemble qui suggèrent les rivalités de bandes, mais sans la touche psychologique qui permettrait une réelle identification. La ville, très présente, est figurée par une structure métallique imaginée par Dominique Drillot et permet de multiples jeux d’espaces sur plusieurs niveaux. La chorégraphe s’appuie également sur des compositions musicales originales, faisant du spectacle une célébration de la jeunesse, d’aujourd’hui et d’hier.
