Repéré et lancé par ECM voici près de vingt ans, Tord Gustavsen est fidèle au label allemand pour lequel il a enregistré neuf albums, dont le tout dernier a paru en avril dernier. C’est la musique de ce disque sobrement intitulé « Opening » qu’il vient présenter pour deux soirs à Paris, dans l’intimité d’un club de jazz, le Sunside, où son sens de la nuance et la délicatesse évanescente de ses interprétations devraient s’apprécier à leur juste mesure.
Improvisation mélodique
Issu de la fertile scène norvégienne, le pianiste s’est en effet imposé comme un exemple de cette école scandinave du jazz qui, profondément marquée par l’influence de Keith Jarrett et ses collaborations européennes, explore le trio comme un espace délicat et contemplatif, ouvert sur les possibles de l’improvisation mélodique, sans heurt et sans violence. Longtemps resté fidèle aux mêmes musiciens, Gustavsen accueille un nouveau contrebassiste, Steinar Raknes, qui ajoute par moments des touches d’électronique au son du trio. Parmi les titres, il est question de cercles, de trouvailles, de flux et de rituel. Autant de mots qui en disent long sur ses intentions.
