« Chaque fois que (…) l’on me montre le chemin des lieux d’aisance construits à la manière de jadis, semi-obscurs et pourtant d’une propreté méticuleuse, je ressens intensément la qualité rare de l’architecture japonaise. (…) Voilà qui est conçu véritablement pour la paix de l’esprit. » confiait l’écrivain Junichiro Tanizaki dans son bel Eloge de l’ombre. Nichée en creux de cette conception d’un lieu si intime, qui tranche net avec la tapageuse blancheur occidentale, quelque chose de l’irréductible écart entre deux civilisations filtre sans doute… Le sujet pourrait bien se trouver au cœur de Tori no tobu takasa d’Oriza Hirata – soit en en Français « La hauteur à laquelle volent les oiseaux », mais décliné sur le ton marketing. Transposant Par-dessus bord, pièce fleuve de Michel Vinaver sur l’irruption du capitalisme moderne dans la France des années 60, l’auteur japonais brode à gros points sur une trame collée au Japon d’aujourd’hui : l’usine de papier toilette Ravoire et Dehaze menacé par la concurrence américaine devient ainsi un fabriquant de sièges toilettes automatisés (avec des jets d’eau réglables et des sécheurs incorporés) confronté à la compétition des cuvettes françaises Leblanc.
Indigeste saga
L’entreprise, les hiérarchies obséquieuses, les rapports de force, les jalousies intrigantes, le passage du paternalisme débonnaire aux froides pratiques managériales, le triomphe du cynique marketing, la financiarisation de l’économie mondiale, les séances de brainstorming et les réunions de motivations collectives … Tous les thèmes et l’intrigue se retrouvent en condensé dans la version japonaise, y compris la figure de l’auteur livrant ses commentaires. Cependant, du risible pamphlet que portait l’original, certes lesté de fortes longueurs et constats de nos jours surannés, ne reste qu’une laborieuse saga, confuse, rebattue et démonstrative. Même le décalage entre le sérieux du sujet, qui évoque le chômage, la pression des conditions de travail, l’arrivisme rayonnant, et le dérisoire de l’objet – le WC high-tech – n’arrache que de maigres sourires. D’autant que le jeu des comédiens, fort disparate, tire vers la caricature et que la mise en scène appliquée d’Arnaud Meunier semble courir après le texte. La genèse du projet lui revient pourtant. En 2006, il avait créé La demande d’emploi de Michel Vinaver dans le théâtre d’Oriza Hirata à Tokyo, et monté en France Gens de Séoul, pièce du dramaturge japonais. D’où l’idée d’« inventer ce « théâtre-fusion ». Mais rien à faire… on n’arrive pas à avaler cette indigeste soupe.
