Oscar Peterson, qui vient de mourir, aura été le premier artiste occidental à remarquer cette légendaire pianiste japonaise influencée par Bud Powell. C’était en 1952… Il parvient alors à convaincre immédiatement le producteur Norman Granz d’enregistrer son premier album. Le début d’un parcours musical d’une incroyable richesse. Après des études au Berklee College of Music de Boston, Toshiko Akiyoshirencontre, en 1968, celui qui deviendra son mari : le saxophoniste ténor et flûtiste Lew Tabackin. En 1982 à New York, elle donne naissance au Toshiko Akiyoshi Jazz Orchestra à la tête duquel elle enregistre 22 albums, élu à quatre reprises « meilleur big band » par le magazine de jazz Down Beat. Invitée de la Maison de la Culture du Japon à Paris, Toshiko Akiyoshi joue en solo le 22 février à 20h, puis le lendemain en quartet avec son mari Lew Tabackin au saxophone, Riccardo Del Fra à la contrebasse et Simon Goubert à la batterie. En deuxième partie du même concert, Toshiko Akiyoshi prendra aussi, en experte, les commandes du big band du département jazz et musiques improvisées du Conservatoire National supérieur de Musique de Paris.
