Cela faisait longtemps que tout le monde savait que Toumani Diabaté était un musicien accompli, entendez un virtuose expert doublé d’un chef d’orchestre hors-pair. Sa longue discographie plaidait pour sa musicalité sans failles, tout comme ses participations témoignaient de son ouverture d’esprit : il fut ainsi de l’aventure « Songhaï » avec le flamenco de Ketama puis bien plus tard aux côtés de la divine Björk, il s’associa au tromboniste de free jazz Roswell Rudd pour « MALIcool » avant d’être partie prenante du « Mali Music » de la pop-star anglaise Damon Albarn. Certes, mais en publiant ses « Mande Variations », l’héritier d’une longue lignée de joueurs de kora a franchi un nouveau cap. Seul à la kora, près de vingt ans après son initiatique « Kaira », il transcende toutes les histoires de styles et de frontières, pour donner une version tout à la fois universelle et singulière de la musique.
