Le Comte Pozna vit dans un château reculé des Carpates. Ce jouisseur riche et égocentrique est moqué par sa femme, Poznabella, qui ne cesse de l’asticoter. Alors qu’elle lui refuse la moutarde dont il adore accompagner sa mortadelle, il jure de tout donner pour un pot du goûteux condiment : les anges de la mort le prennent au mot et débarquent illico ! Il faut donc que Pozna, dans le court délai que lui offre la dysorthographie du Très-Haut, qui a laissé une coquille dans l’ordre de mission, trouve quelqu’un pour mourir à sa place. Mais, hélas, tout le monde veut vivre… Carole Lorang et Mani Muller s’emparent de cette comédie féroce et drolatique dans laquelle Levin dénonce l’égoïsme de l’homme moderne, « prêt à tout pour continuer à jouir de son petit monde matérialiste ». Choisissant de « traiter la pièce comme un rêve éveillé », les co-metteurs en scène confient à une « poignée de comédiens » tous les rôles de cette allégorie pseudo médiévale au vitriol.
