Depuis sa réouverture en 2007 sous la direction de Jérôme Deschamps, l’Opéra Comique revisite son passé avec gourmandise, ressuscitant les pages oubliées (L’Étoile de Chabrier, Zampa de Hérold, Fra Diavolo d’Auber ou Fortunio de Messager), ou faisant regagner aux chefs-d’œuvre intemporels le lieu de leur création (Carmen l’an dernier, Pelléas et Mélisande en juin prochain). Mignon, d’après Goethe, que met en scène ce mois-ci Jean-Louis Benoit, est l’une de ces œuvres emblématiques – et à plus d’un titre – de la salle Favart. Créé en 1866, cet opéra-comique en 3 actes fut le premier ouvrage d’Ambroise Thomas à y être entendu. Il y était toujours plus de vingt ans plus tard et c’est d’ailleurs au cours d’une de ses représentations, en mai 1887, que la salle fut détruite par un incendie.
Retour en grâce
Si, au tournant du Second Empire et de la IIIe République, Ambroise Thomas avait rencontré dans la bourgeoisie parisienne un public pour son art (Mignon dépassa du vivant du compositeur les mille représentations) et un soutien à sa quête d’honneurs (il fut pendant un quart de siècle directeur du Conservatoire), la postérité a été beaucoup moins bienveillante envers ce symbole de l’académisme et son Caïd pas plus que son Songe d’une nuit d’été, grands succès à l’époque, n’ont plus depuis longtemps les honneurs des scènes lyriques. Il n’empêche : Hamlet ou surtout Mignon offrent de beaux airs sous une orchestration habile et peuvent encore émouvoir et séduire le public comme ils attirent toujours nombre d’interprètes. Autour de François-Xavier Roth, dont c’est la première production lyrique en tant que « chef associé » de l’Orchestre philharmonique de Radio France, la jeune distribution ne manque pas d’attraits avec Marie Lenormand dans le rôle-titre ou Ismael Jordi en Wilhelm Meister.
