« Ahmed, Mohamed, Leïla, Saïd, Omar et les autres sont des personnages de fiction que j’ai inventés pour les besoins du récit, celui de l’épopée humaine oubliée ou méconnue de ces jeunes Algériens et Marocains, venus en nombre depuis la fin de la guerre et jusqu’à la fin des années 80 travailler dans les mines et vivre dans le bassin » note Jean-Paul Wenzel. En « archéologue d’une civilisation engloutie », l’auteur et directeur de la compagnie Dorénavant a nourri les épisodes tumultueux, drôles ou tragiques de la vie des protagonistes de rencontres faites en Lorraine et d’entretiens menés par l’Université de Metz auprès des mineurs maghrébins et de leur famille. « La puissance d’évocation de ces hommes, de ces femmes, l’énergie considérable de leur parole ont de bout en bout inspiré mon écriture » relève-t-il, naturellement invité, pour toutes ces raisons, à passer du livre au plateau.
