Par son dépassement de la tonalité avec la série dodécaphonique, s’articulant autour des douze sons de la gamme chromatique, Schönberg a façonné le visage de la modernité musicale. À partir de douze extraits qui résonnent avec les mots et les peintures du compositeur autrichien, Bertrand Bonello suit la chronologie d’une évolution esthétique, des effluves post-romantiques de La Nuit transfigurée et Pelléas et Mélisande au sérialisme du Concerto pour piano écrit aux États-Unis, où il s’est exilé et a fini sa vie, en passant par les expérimentations du monodrame avec Erwartung et Pierrot lunaire au moment où Stravinski et les Ballets russes imposaient une autre révolution. Dans un format expérimental où les effectifs musicaux à géométrie variable, allant du piano solo – confié à David Kadouch – aux répertoires chambriste et symphonique, croisent les jeux de lumières, de vidéos et d’acteurs, ce spectacle transversal placé sous la baguette d’Ariane Matiakh fait revivre un destin artistique au carrefour des convulsions de l’Histoire.
