« Il est très rare de trouver une œuvre qui exprime des idées aussi profondes avec autant d’humour qu’Eloge de l’oisiveté. Pour moi, ce texte a d’abord été un bonheur de lecture. On se délecte véritablement de l’intelligence et de l’esprit de Bertrand Russell. Il y a aussi une bonté chez lui. C’est ce qui m’a frappé, adolescent, en voyant son portrait dans le Petit Robert, bien avant que je ne lise ses œuvres. Surtout, il y a l’urgence de ce qu’il dit. Il écrit en 1932, mais on a l’impression que rien n’a changé, que tout est à refaire. Oui, le travail continue à abrutir des gens, à les pousser au suicide. Oui, la pauvreté s’accroît alors que des richesses extraordinaires sont accaparées par quelques-uns. Oui, la morale du travail continue à servir de leurre… On a parfois tendance à n’écouter que le discours majoritaire. J’aimerais, à travers ce spectacle, rappeler qu’il existe d’autres possibilités, qu’on peut vouloir vivre sa vie autrement, et pourquoi pas travailler moins pour vivre plus. Éloge de l’oisiveté est un questionnement partagé avec le public.
Comment résister à la tyrannie de l’efficacité ?
Qu’est-ce que le travail ? Que signifie la désapprobation morale qu’encourent la paresse et les paresseux ? Comment résister à la tyrannie de l’efficacité ? Et si c’était notre liberté individuelle qui était en jeu ? Bertrand Russell traite du thème du travail, de la question de la justice sociale. Une table, une chaise, un fauteuil club, un lutrin avec le portrait de Bertrand Russell. La scénographie voulue par Véronique Dumont est très simple. Un homme nous fait une conférence (le texte de Bertrand Russell), mais ne cesse de s’interrompre pour digresser. Il raconte la vie de l’auteur, cite le dictionnaire étymologique, fait découvrir des écrivains qu’il aime, raconte sa propre expérience de cadre en entreprise devenu étudiant en art dramatique… Ce spectacle répond à un procédé d’adresse directe aux spectateurs. Toute idée de quatrième mur est exclue. Je cherche à installer une véritable complicité avec le public. Je cherche à lui faire partager ma réflexion et non à lui faire subir un exposé dogmatique. »
