Le nom de Scott Joplin est définitivement associé au genre du ragtime. De Maple Leaf Rag à The Entertainer, ses mélodies, popularisées notamment par le cinéma, ont fait le tour du monde. Ce que l’on sait moins, c’est que le compositeur américain a également écrit des opéras. Le Théâtre du Châtelet a eu la très bonne idée de programmer cette saison son second opus lyrique : Treemonisha. Composé en 1911, cet ouvrage nous plonge au cœur de l’Arkansas de la fin du XIXème siècle. L’histoire relate l’éducation d’une jeune fille noire qui a été abandonnée sous un arbre, d’où le titre de l’opéra. On peut voir derrière ce récit initiatique une réflexion sur la place de la femme et sur celle de la communauté noire dans la société américaine. Scott Joplin n’arriva toutefois pas à imposer son œuvre dans les théâtres – la création se déroula en 1972, soit plus de cinquante ans après la mort du compositeur.
Des voix prestigieuses
Le très imaginatif directeur du Châtelet, Jean-Luc Choplin, a eu l’idée de confier cette réhabilitation à Blanca Li. La danseuse et chorégraphe andalouse, connue pour avoir dépoussiéré le flamenco, distille toujours une énergie irrésistible dans ses spectacles. Adepte des rencontres entre les formes artistiques, elle travaille régulièrement avec les milieux du cinéma, des arts plastiques ou du multimédia. Nous avions particulièrement apprécié son spectacle Corazon Loco, subtiles variations autour de l’amour, mêlant danseurs de sa compagnie et ensemble vocal de musique contemporaine. Pour Treemonisha, Blanca Li sera entourée d’une équipe prestigieuse d’artistes noirs majoritairement américains, avec notamment la mythique mezzo-soprano Grace Bumbry et le puissant baryton-basse Willard White. Dans la fosse, le jeune Kazem Abdullah, qui a fait la saison dernière ses débuts au Met de New York, dirigera la version de l’opéra orchestrée par Gunther Schuller, l’orchestration originale ayant malheureusement disparu.
