Quelques-unes des chansons de Charles Trénet – à commencer par La mer, rebaptisée Beyond the sea à l’international – sont devenues le terrain de jeu familier des musiciens de jazz. Mais jamais un projet tel que celui que vient d’imaginer le contrebassiste Tony Bonfils n’avait vu le jour. « Trénet Manouche » est d’abord un projet de musiciens : trois authentiques spécialistes de leur instrument (basse-violon-guitare), tous fous des accents de Django se font « chanteurs » et s’emparent de ces chansons que l’on connaît tous – de « Nationale 7 » à « Je chante ». Sans complexe, et mieux encore avec sensibilité, un cœur gros comme ça et un swing à toute épreuve. Un disque verra le jour bientôt, c’est sûr, mais pour l’heure le projet « se fait les dents » en public, dans l’intimité de petits concerts, comme « entre amis », où le meilleur feeling jazz et gypsy devraient être au rendez-vous. Auprès de Tony Bonfils, personnage important du jazz français depuis 30 ans (de Nougaro à Grappelli) : la violoniste Mathilde Febrer, une « classique » qui sait ce que swinguer veut dire, et le guitariste Fred Loizeau, partenaire de jeu de Patrick Saussois et Stochelo Rosenberg, c’est dire. On se régale.
