Avec l’audace et l’indépendance artistique qui lui sont coutumières, le pianiste français choisit pour rendre hommage au Duke de puiser à la source des grandes fresques orchestrales ambitieuses qu’il a initiées à partir de la fin des années 40, à l’image de la suite “Black Brown and Beige” ou de la musique du film “Anatomy of a murder” d’Otto Preminger, projets d’envergure à rapprocher d’œuvres de musique classique. Pour revisiter ces chefs-d’œuvre encore dans l’ombre des partitions pour big-band des années 20-40, Delbecq s’appuie sur une formule instrumentale compacte, articulée autour d’un remarquable binôme rythmique post-moderne composée de Jean-Jacques Avenel (cb) et Steve Arguelles (batterie) et de deux saxophonistes d’élite, le new-yorkais Tony Malaby et le britannique Tony Coe. Un des trésors de l’édition 2012 de Sons d’Hiver qui se poursuit jusqu’au 16 février dans le Val-de-Marne.
