Des nouvelles, La Corde possède l’efficacité de la construction, des personnages caractérisés, vite installés, une intrigue tendue au dénouement surprenant et éloquent : un père a promis la corde à son fils prodigue et à son retour lui demande de se pendre lui-même. Naturellement, ce dernier refuse, préférant comploter pour lui dérober ses trésors. Mal lui en prendra. Cette pièce dynamique et bien ficelée introduit le spectacle et annonce ses thématiques dominantes. Des conflits de générations placent régulièrement l’ordre traditionnel, enracinant l’homme dans la réalité et la terre, face aux rêves de gloire et de fortune qui poussent au départ et à la mer. Plusieurs lectures rendent ces oppositions signifiantes. La grille biographique laisse affleurer l’image d’un auteur en guerre avec son propre père. La dénonciation du pouvoir pervertissant de l’argent et le tiraillement entre aventure et sédentarité laissent deviner l’influence d’une société en proie au doute au moment de basculer dans la modernité. Né en Amérique de parents irlandais, Eugène O’Neill paraît en effet relater cette bascule du centre de gravité de la planète depuis la vieille Europe vers la nouvelle Amérique. Ecrites autour de la première guerre mondiale, ses pièces relaient les espoirs et désillusions générés par un monde en plein bouleversement.
Siméon, Strindberg et l’Irlande
Toutefois, si la traduction de Jean-Pierre Siméon brille dans la langue que charrient les personnages embourbés de la Corde, l’intérêt de l’entreprise de Guy Freixe s’essouffle dans la deuxième partie du triptyque. Sur un radeau à la dérive, trois naufragés égrènent leurs rêves passés. Dans Soif – où l’on pourrait voir l’alcoolisme qui mina toute la vie de l’écrivain prendre une forme métaphorique – Guy Freixe tourne le dos au réalisme initial et choisit un univers proche de la bande dessinée. Seulement, les hallucinations des naufragés n’offrent pas davantage à partager que le récit de leurs illusions perdues, et l’explosif triangle marin more-danseuse de cabaret-gentleman British tourne au pétard mouillé. Dans l’ultime panneau,exactementcomme dans Père de Strindberg, il s’agit d’envoyer un père chez les fous. Ici, le spectacle regagne en souffle et en espace. Encore une fois, la mer – la mère ? – allume les désirs qu’elle engloutit. Tout au long du spectacle, l’élégante scénographie modulable aura d’ailleurs convoqué des matières naturelles – terre, toile, bois – rappelant l’Irlande et ses teintes automnales, ses paysages chaotiques où l’océan et les tourbières, les falaises et les forêts s’entremêlent et s’entrechoquent violemment.
