Plus de dix-sept ans après sa création, la production de Tristan et Isolde mise en scène par Peter Sellars fait désormais figure de classique. Si, en 2005, l’absence presque totale de décors et accessoires et surtout le rôle tenu par les projections vidéo de Bill Viola pouvaient déconcerter, les reprises successives ont confirmé l’extrême pertinence de la lecture du duo états-unien : plutôt que d’inventer quelque action, Sellars et Viola scrutent un au-delà des mots et de la musique sans jamais en trahir l’esprit. La musique, justement, a souvent été bien servie : après Esa-Pekka Salonen lors de la première série, la fosse a ainsi accueilli Valery Gergiev, Semyon Bychkov, Philippe Jordan. C’est à Gustavo Dudamel qu’il revient aujourd’hui d’accompagner une distribution entièrement renouvelée, avec l’Isolde de Mary Elizabeth Williams, qui a fait ses débuts dans le rôle cet automne à l’Opéra de Seattle.
