Réunissez l’un des metteurs en scène les plus engagés du moment et l’un des plasticiens-vidéastes les plus originaux, vous obtenez une production d’opéra exceptionnelle. La vision de Tristan et Isolde que développent Peter Sellars et Bill Viola imbrique avec une grande intelligence les puissances d’Eros et de Thanatos. On reste impressionné autant par la justesse des déplacements des chanteurs que par la beauté abstraite et poétique des images. Beau casting pour cette reprise, qui réunit notamment Clifton Forbis et Waltraud Meier dans les rôles titres. Le vaillant Franz-Josef Selig incarne le Roi Marke. Dans la fosse, on retrouve Semyon Bychkov, dont le mandat à la tête de l’Orchestre de Paris, de 1989 à 1998, avait été pour le moins controversé. Il vit aujourd’hui une lune de miel avec l’Orchestre symphonique du WDR de Cologne.
