Adeptes de l’idée de « spectacle total », les membres de la Compagnie Sentimental Bourreau trouvent en Wagner un matériau idéal et ce même désir de mêler les apports du jeu, de la musique, du récit, des images et de la scénographie de manière équilibrée et inventive. La musique devient ici moteur de la pièce et la dramaturgie se fait musicale, attentive aux leitmotivs et au rythme de la partition wagnérienne. « Tristan et Isolde n’ont pas le droit de s’aimer, et malgré cette interdiction, ils décident de vivre cet amour. » résume Mathieu Bauer qui a choisi d’organiser l’architecture du spectacle autour de cette tension, confiant à Lancelot Hamelin le soin de produire un texte revisitant le mythe et le livret et précisant ses effets à l’épreuve de la scène. Comédiens, musiciens, inventeurs vidéo et sonore travaillent de concert et d’harmonie à ce que tous, artistes et spectateurs, puissent ensemble, à l’instar des deux amants bienheureux et maudits, « se noyer, s’engloutir, perdre conscience, volupté suprême »…
