Installé aux Etats-Unis où il enseigne à l’Université Columbia de New York depuis 1997, Tristan Murail (né en 1947) est internationalement reconnu comme le fondateur et théoricien, avec Gérard Grisey, du courant de la musique spectrale. Sa musique et ses articles dans la revue musicologique Entre-temps ont contribué à provoquer l’ouverture vers un monde musical et sonore nouveau, marqué par le rôle central et moteur joué par l’informatique et l’électronique dans l’exploration du son dans toutes ses dimensions. Autre fait essentiel de son parcours artistique : la rencontre avec le compositeur italien Giacinto Scelsi au début des années 70, alors qu’il était pensionnaire à la Villa Médicis à Rome. Rien d’étonnant dès lors que deux œuvres de Scelsi (Yamaon ; Okanagon) ouvrent cet hommage portrait le 11 (dirigé par Ludovic Morlot), rapprochées de L’esprit des dunes et de Serendib de Murail. Le surlendemain, la musique du compositeur français (Vues aériennes ; Les ruines circulaires ; Garrigue) cohabitera, dans un programme en formation plus réduite, avec des œuvres de Morton Feldman et Marco Momi.
