Créée le Vendredi saint, en l’an 1727, en l’église Saint-Thomas de Leipzig, la Passion selon saint Matthieu est une apothéose de la représentation musicale, où le récit est dirigé par la musique vers des moments d’extrême intensité dramatique qui touchaient au cœur les fidèles du temps de Bach. Aujourd’hui, alors que le répertoire sacré s’est largement sécularisé, les programmateurs continuent de chercher à coordonner ces Passions en concert avec le temps liturgique. C’est ainsi que Michael Hofstetter dirige cette année la « Saint Matthieu » pour le Samedi saint et le dimanche de Pâques à la tête de la Hofkapelle München et du Tölzer Knabenchor. Devançant quelque peu la Semaine sainte, Ton Koopman, avec le Chœur et l’Orchestre baroque d’Amsterdam, présente la première incarnation de la Passion dans la musique de Bach, la Passion selon saint Jean (18 mars). Pour ce cycle donné en la Chapelle royale du Château de Versailles, c’est à Jordi Savall qu’il revient de donner à entendre l’inouï : une reconstitution de la Passion saint Marc que Bach donna en 1731 mais dont la partition est perdue. Donnée à Versailles le Lundi saint (26 mars), l’œuvre est reprise à la Philharmonie de Paris quatre jours plus tard… soit le Vendredi saint.
