Pourquoi avez-vous choisi de mettre à l’honneur la scène anglaise ?
Denis Le Bas : En réalité, nous le faisons régulièrement parce que nos « voisins d’en face » ont des choses particulières à nous dire. Déjà, la première note du festival en 1982 avait été « Free like a bird » par le Mike Westbrook Brass Band. Depuis, Jazz sous les pommiers a continué régulièrement de mettre l’accent sur le jazz britannique. Notre proximité géographique nous incite bien sûr à rester attentifs à l’actualité du jazz de l’autre côté de La Manche mais c’est surtout une amitié de plus de vingt ans avec John Cumming, le directeur du London Jazz Festival, qui nous permet de rester « up to date » !
Comment pourriez vous qualifier la couleur particulière de ce jazz anglais’
D. L. B. : Le jazz anglais nous interpelle depuis toujours parce qu’il comporte certaines originalités : il côtoie une forte culture rock, il peut être joué par des communautés d’origines très diverses (pakistanaise, indienne, jamaïcaine…), il bénéficie parfois d’influences celtes… Et il pétille souvent grâce à un sens de l’humour très caractéristique. Bref, cela ne sonne pas comme « chez nous » !
« Le jazz anglais nous interpelle depuis toujours »
Dans ce contexte, la présence en résidence du saxophoniste Andy Sheppard (depuis 2008 et jusqu’à fin 2010) prend un
relief particulier. Quel sera son projet 2010?
D. L. B. : Andy Sheppard est en résidence longue à Jazz sous les pommiers… Concrètement cela signifie qu’il vient travailler environ une semaine tous les deux mois à Coutances et en Basse-Normandie. Cette résidence se construit via des concerts, des créations, des actions de médiation, des masterclasses, des rencontres… Mais aussi des projets insolites associant tout type d’aventures : avec un cuisinier, avec des percussionnistes handicapés, avec 150 saxophonistes etc… Les deux projets présentés cette année l’amèneront à travailler avec 150 choristes amateurs pour la création de sa composition Glossolalia (le 15 mai), et avec la compagnie de théâtre professionnelle Dodeka, installée à Coutances, pour trois représentations de Jack L’Eventreur sur un texte de Robert Desnos (les 12 et 13 mai). Cet artiste place la résidence à un niveau européen. Il fourmille d’idées, joue le jeu des actions de médiation ou de formation, comme des créations très valorisantes. C’est aussi un musicien que nous apprécions beaucoup pour ses qualités humaines.

Parmi les huit groupes anglais au programme : Empirical, Portico quartet, James Morton’s Porkchop, Arun Ghosh Indo Jazz sextet et Get The Blessing, qui jouent pour la première fois en France, mais aussi Bonobo Live, le Matthew Herbert Big Band et John McLaughlin & the 4th dimension.
