« L’exposé du chemin par lequel passe un kamikaze avant le passage à l’acte. » : tel est le projet des Sirènes de Bagdad que René Chéneaux met en scène avec autant de sobriété que de force, en s’appuyant seulement sur la puissance évocatrice du récit de Khadra, sur la musicalité et la précision de sa langue et sur la capacité des comédiens à faire leur ce récit d’humiliation où un jeune Bédouin, promis à la quiétude de l’ouvrage intellectuel, se fait combattant et vengeur de la nudité dévoilée de son père. Faisant en sorte d’ « objectiver le récit », René Chéneaux hisse ce destin d’épouvante à la hauteur de celui des terribles victimes des tragédies antiques en composant, à partir du texte du grand écrivain algérien, un théâtre qui « cherche la ligne de crête, à la manière d’Eschyle ou Camus, entre l’acte dément et l’acte juste, entre le terrorisme et la révolte. »
