Trottoir se réfère-t-il à Rue, le duo qui a propulsé Volmir Cordeiro sur le devant de la scène ? Si l’artiste continue d’approfondir sa démarche, c’est dans une boîte noire qu’elle s’exprime aujourd’hui, dans un espace contraint et circonscrit. L’artiste a imaginé cinq séquences distinctes dans cinq possibilités d’espace qui sont autant d’évolutions autour de figures stéréotypées telles que la prostituée, l’enfant, le travailleur, le citoyen, l’étranger. L’espace du trottoir les réunit, symbolisant la circulation, proposant le mimétisme ou la fiction. Comme toujours chez Volmir Cordeiro, la métamorphose guide les interprètes, plongés dans un jeu puissant et sans concession : l’abandon, l’ivresse, et le débordement sont requis pour emporter le groupe dans une énergie vibrante, désordonnée et libre, quoique maîtrisée. Le visage – autre obsession du chorégraphe – devient ici un élément plus plastique qu’identitaire, à travers l’emploi d’une forme singulière de masque.
