Comment a commencé ce projet ?
Troy Poplous : A cause de ma passion pour Fats Waller. Et bien sûr aussi de mon amour pour le spectacle Ain’t Misbehavin. Quand je l’ai découvert ado, ce fut un choc. D’une part parce que Broadway, c’est quelque chose d’énorme aux Etats-Unis ; et d’autre part parce que le casting était incroyable et entièrement afro-américain : Nell Carter, André DeShields, Armelia McQueen… J’ai trouvé que c’était quelque chose de bien à montrer à mes élèves de La Nouvelle-Orléans.
L’idée principale, c’est de faire découvrir cette comédie musicale aux jeunes ?
T. P. :Les jeunes générations perdent peu à peu ce qui a fait l’identité des générations précédentes. Ils sont assis sur un héritage, mais ne se rendent pas compte du travail qui a été fait. Je veux que ces jeunes ne perdent pas Fats Waller, la Harlem Renaissance…

Les jeunes Américains méconnaissent-ils cette période ?
T. P. :Oui, et pourtant toute la musique d’aujourd’hui, du jazz contemporain au hip-hop, découle de la musique de cette époque : Fats Waller, Scott Joplin, Eubie Blake, Noble Sissle, Duke Ellington… Pour l’une des premières fois de l’Histoire des Etats-Unis, les Afro-Américains ne se sont plus considérés comme des esclaves ou des serviteurs, mais comme des êtres d’importance. C’est le début d’une littérature, d’un théâtre, d’un art, d’une mode, de toutes ces choses qui donnent leur fierté aux êtres humains. Ce sont les Lumières du peuple noir de cette époque.
Quel est le message d’Ain’t Misbehavin ?
T. P. :La Harlem Renaissance a sorti les gens de leurs vies et de leurs problèmes solitaires pour les rassembler en tant que communauté : ils allaient à l’Apollo Theater, au Savoy Ballroom, au Colisee, et dans tous ces lieux de Harlem pour communier et profiter de la vie. La musique d’Aint Misbehavin c’est cela : tout ce spectacle, c’est de la joie. Il met en valeur la face comique de Fats Waller (Your Feet’s Too Big par exemple) dans de grandes scènes de fête.
