Cherchant à retrouver et à réinventer sur scène l’univers et la poétique de Pasolini, Luciano Travaglino organise une déambulation, en forme de chemin de croix, pour le vaste espace scénique du Théâtre Jean-Vilar de Vitry-sur-Seine. Le parcours sera repris dans une sorte d’immobilité religieuse sur la petite scène intimiste du Théâtre de la Girandole à Montreuil. Toto, le père, et Ninetto, le fils, errent dans la campagne et la banlieue romaines et marquent des arrêts autour de stations, comme dans les mystères médiévaux, qui offrent des tableaux composant tous ensemble un portrait de l’humanité. Accompagnés par un corbeau marxiste qui finira à la casserole, ils sont soudain transportés au XIIIème siècle, auprès de François d’Assise, et se mettent à révéler l’Evangile aux faucons et aux moineaux, avant de reprendre leur périple voué à l’échec. En adaptant le film de Pasolini, le Théâtre de la Girandole cherche à établir un dialogue avec le spectateur « par le biais de cette étincelante parabole d’un poète-prophète inspiré » qui ne peut laisser de trace « qu’en tant que témoin ou que martyr ». Dans la lignée de Dario Fo et de Toto, acteur du film et génie clownesque, Luciano Travaglino et les siens se donnent la « joueuse mission » d’interroger le monde sur un mode populaire, poétique et drôle.
