Si Wendy Beckett écrit et met en scène ses propres pièces depuis dix ans en Australie au sein de sa compagnie Colours Inc, ce n’est qu’en 2018 qu’elle présente en France sa première création. Soit Claudel, l’un de ses nombreux spectacles biographiques, traduit en français par Dominique Hollier. L’Athénée Théâtre Louis-Jouvet devient alors la maison française de Wendy Beckett, qui y monte l’année suivante Anaïs Nin, une de ses vies. Avant de revenir cette année avec Un Espoir. Sous-titrée « Trois reflets d’une adoption », cette pièce met en scène un trio formé d’une mère biologique, d’une mère adoptive et d’un enfant. Incarnés par Hélène Babu, Christine Gagnepain et Rebecca Williams, les trois personnages abordent le sujet du point de vue de l’enfant. Nourri par de nombreux entretiens, cet Espoir se fonde sur l’idée de l’auteure selon laquelle « nous faisons tous de notre mieux ». Et que « le courage consiste à ne pas avoir peur de déconstruire le puzzle de nos vies et à trouver, ensuite, assez d’amour pour le réassembler ».
