Les parents de Bobby ont décidé de le scolariser et donc de quitter la plantation familiale pour s’installer en ville. Cet exode, qui a lieu pendant l’été indien, s’accompagne d’une séparation douloureuse du jeune garçon avec son grand-père. Le titre original de la nouvelle, I remember my Grandpa, montre combien le projecteur est braqué sur ce personnage avec qui s’achève d’ailleurs le récit. Sur scène, une toile de fond blanche symbolise le papier des lettres que s’écrivaient Bobby et son grand-père. Ce drap représente aussi la neige qui vient clôturer l’été indien dans une atmosphère nostalgique évoquant un monde à jamais perdu. Dans le spectacle de la compagnie Mack et les gars, un narrateur, Laurent Dolce, croise les pas d’un enfant solitaire et silencieux. Le verbe de l’adulte fait exister l’imaginaire de l’enfant qu’il a été, et transmet le regard bouleversant de l’auteur sur une enfance blessée et solitaire.
